Before You Move
STAY ORGANIZED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER YOUR MOVE
Congratulations! You have made it through the application approval process and it is time to move forward with your move and all the exciting things that come along with that. Below is a list of items that should help you to stay on track before moving day.
- Give written notification of move-out date with current management company
- Call current utility (gas, water, garbage/sewer & recycle, phone, alarm, cable & internet) companies to transfer service out of your name on move-out date or the day after to ensure you still have service the day of your move
- Purge before you pack (have a special box for unwanted items)
- Interview moving companies and determine which one, if any, is right for you
- Schedule movers or family/friends to help on moving day
- Start boxing items that you know you will not need until after you move. Remember, trash bags work as good as boxes for some items.
- Make plans for your pet the day of the move so you are not worried about them getting loose when doors are open
- Plan for your meals the week before your move so you are not dealing with groceries that will spoil
- Be sure and label your boxes well (What items are in the box and what room/cabinet or drawer will they go in)
- Ask the apartment if you can take pictures of the unit or a similar unit prior to move day so you can pre-plan where items will go
- 10 days prior to move, confirm move and new address with new apartment and do an address change with the post office
- Do not pack cleaning supplies until move day so you can clean before you leave
- Get move out checklist from current apartment so there are no surprises on the day of the move
- Make a list of companies to inform of your move once you move in (credit card, bank, employer, investment accounts, medical professionals, friends, family, insurance companies, financial and government institutions)
- Set up apartment rental insurance
- Make sure you have necessary moving supplies (boxes, tape, box paper or padding, marker for labelling, and a dolly if you are not using movers)
